AI Overviews now appear in over 25% of Google searches and reach 2 billion monthly users. When they show up, organic click-through rates drop by 61%. But here’s the flip side: sites that get cited inside an AI Overview see CTR increases of up to 35%. Getting cited is the difference between losing traffic and gaining it.
At NEWMEDIA.COM, we’ve been optimizing client sites for AI Overview visibility as part of our broader AI SEO services. The strategies that work aren’t mysterious, but they are different from traditional SEO in ways most teams haven’t adapted to yet. In this guide, I’ll cover how to get your pages cited for AI overviews.
Identify Queries That Trigger AI Overviews
Not every Google search generates an AI Overview. They appear most frequently on informational and comparison queries, mostly beginning with “how does,” “what is,” “best tools for,” “X vs Y.” Commercial and transactional queries trigger them less often, though that’s changing fast. B2B technology queries now see AI Overviews on 70% of SERPs, up from 36% last year.
Start by checking which of your target keywords currently trigger AI Overviews. Google Search Console’s “AI Overviews” filter (under Search Appearance) shows which queries your site appears in. Ahrefs and Semrush both flag AI Overview presence in their SERP features data. Focus your optimization efforts on queries where AI Overviews already appear; that’s where the opportunity is right now.
Match Content to Search Intent
AI Overviews pull from content that directly matches what the searcher is trying to accomplish. If someone searches “how to reduce SaaS churn” and your page is a general article about customer retention that barely mentions SaaS, you won’t get cited even if you rank well organically.
The intent match needs to be tight. Your page title, headings, and opening paragraphs should reflect the question or problem the searcher has. A page targeting “best CRM for small business” should open by addressing small-business CRM needs specifically, not with three paragraphs on CRM history. AI Overviews favor content that gets to the point fast and stays on topic throughout.
Provide Clear, Direct Answers
44.2% of all LLM citations come from the first 30% of an article. That means your intro and opening sections do most of the heavy lifting for AI Overview inclusion. If you bury the answer halfway down the page, AI systems will find a competitor who states it upfront.
Answer the core question in the first two sentences of the relevant section. Then expand with context, examples, and supporting data. Think of it as the inverted pyramid: lead with the answer, follow with the explanation. This doesn’t mean dumbing down your content. It means structuring it so the most important information is the most accessible. AI Overviews extract what’s clear and direct. They skip what’s buried.
Structure Content for Easy Extraction
AI Overviews now average 13.34 sources per response, up from about 7 in 2024. Getting included in that mix requires content that’s easy for AI systems to parse and extract from.
Use clear, descriptive H2 and H3 headings that match how people phrase questions. Keep paragraphs short and focused on one idea each. Use lists and tables for comparison content, since AI systems pull from structured formats faster than dense prose.Â
Front-load each section with the key takeaway rather than building to it gradually. Bear in mind that AI doesn’t read your page the way a human does. It scans for extractable statements that directly answer a query. You must make those statements easy to find.
Strengthen Topical Authority
AI Overviews evaluate individual pages and also whether that specific page has any depth on the topic. A single blog post about “enterprise SEO” won’t get cited if that’s your only page on the subject. A site with a comprehensive hub- pillar page, supporting articles, case studies, and FAQ content all interlinked- signals genuine authority.
Build content clusters around your priority topics. Cover the subject from multiple angles so AI systems see your site as a definitive resource, not a one-off mention. Sites with strong topical depth earn more AI Overview citations because the models trust sources that demonstrate consistent expertise across a subject area. Depth beats breadth every time for AI SEO.
Improve E-E-A-T Signals
Google’s AI systems use Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness as a trust filter when selecting sources. But E-E-A-T for AI Overviews isn’t evaluated the same way as traditional search. AI systems look beyond on-page signals like author bios; they cross-reference your brand and authors against external sources.
Build author entities with verifiable credentials. Make sure your experts are published on third-party sites, not just your own blog. Earn mentions in industry publications and respected directories. Keep your brand description consistent across your website, LinkedIn, G2, and industry listings.Â
AI systems trust consensus. If multiple credible sources confirm your authority in a topic, you’re more likely to get cited. Whether you’re an in-house team or working with a ChatGPT SEO agency, building trustworthy content and strong entity signals is becoming essential for AI-driven search visibility.
Add Original Insights and First-Party Data
Content with original data gets cited significantly more than content rehashing existing information. Adding statistics increases AI visibility by 22%. Including original quotes boosts it by 37%. AI systems prioritize novel information because it provides something their training data doesn’t already contain.
Publish original research, proprietary benchmarks, survey results, or anonymized client data. Include direct quotes from named experts on your team. These elements make your content genuinely unique- something AI can’t get from ten other sites saying the same thing.Â
At NEWMEDIA.COM, the content pieces we’ve seen earn the most AI Overview citations are consistently the ones with first-party data that nobody else has published.
Optimize for Long-Tail and Conversational Queries
AI Overviews appear most frequently on longer, more specific queries, the kind of questions people ask when they’re deeper into their research. “What is search engine optimization?” triggers an AI Overview. But so does “how long does enterprise SEO take to show ROI for a SaaS company,” and that longer query is far more commercially valuable.
Optimize for conversational, multi-part questions your buyers ask. Use your sales team’s call transcripts, customer support tickets, and FAQ data to find these queries since keyword tools often miss them because the search volume looks tiny.Â
Build content that answers these specific questions directly. The search volume per query is low, but the cumulative traffic adds up, and the conversion rates are dramatically higher because the intent is so precise.
Use Relevant Schema Markup
Schema markup helps search engines and AI systems understand what your content is about, who wrote it, and what entities it references. Organization schema, FAQ schema, Article schema, Author schema, and How-To schema are the most relevant for AI Overview optimization.
Here’s the honest caveat, though. Recent Ahrefs research from May 2026 found that schema produced no major uplift in AI citations on its own. Adding schema won’t magically get you into AI Overviews. But it strengthens entity signals and helps AI systems parse your content more accurately.Â
Think of schema as infrastructure, not a standalone tactic. It makes your other AI SEO efforts more effective rather than doing the job alone.
What Are AI Overviews?
AI Overviews are Google’s AI-generated summaries that appear at the top of search results for certain queries. Instead of showing you ten blue links and letting you pick, Google’s AI reads multiple sources, synthesizes the information, and presents a direct answer with citations to the pages it pulled from.
They launched broadly in 2024 and now reach over 2 billion monthly users. When an AI Overview appears, it pushes traditional organic results further down the page, which is why organic CTR drops 61% on queries where they show up. However, pages that get cited inside the AI Overview can see CTR increases of up to 35%, because Google is essentially endorsing your content as a trusted source.
AI Overviews are most common on informational queries, how-to searches, comparison queries, and definition-style questions. They appear less on navigational queries (where someone is looking for a specific website) and purely transactional queries (where someone is ready to buy).
How AI Overviews Select and Summarize Sources
Understanding how AI Overviews choose sources is the foundation of optimizing for them. It’s not the same as traditional ranking factors, though there’s significant overlap.
Ranking Still Matters, But It’s Not Enough
76.1% of URLs cited in AI Overviews also rank in Google’s top 10, so ranking helps. But 40% of citations come from pages ranking below position 10. That means AI Overviews pull from a wider pool than the visible first page. A page ranking at position 15 with better content structure and clearer answers can get cited over a page ranking at position 3 with a weaker format.
Content Freshness and Recency
76.4% of ChatGPT’s most-cited pages were updated in the last 30 days. AI systems favor fresh content because it’s more likely to be accurate. If your content hasn’t been updated in a year, you’re at a disadvantage against competitors who refresh regularly. Build content updates into your editorial calendar, not as a one-time project, but as an ongoing process.
Third-Party Validation
AI systems cross-reference your content against what other sources say about you. Brands earning the most web mentions earn up to 10x more mentions in AI Overviews. Digital PR, guest contributions, review site presence, and industry publication features all feed into this.Â
As AI in digital marketing continues to influence how brands build authority online, publishing only on your own site limits your AI Overview potential. Distributing content to external publications can increase AI citations by up to 325%.Â
Content Structure and Extractability
As I mentioned earlier, AI Overviews favor content that’s easy to extract from. Clear headings, direct answers in the first sentences of sections, structured data, lists, and tables all improve your chances. The AI scans for the clearest, most direct statement that answers the query. Make that statement impossible to miss.
The Bottom Line
The uncomfortable reality of search engine optimization today is that your rankings might look fine while your traffic quietly declines. AI Overviews are absorbing clicks that used to belong to the top three organic positions. But the data also shows something most teams overlook: sites cited in AI Overviews see up to 35% more clicks, not fewer.Â
The strategies I’ve outlined in this guide aren’t separate from traditional SEO. Rather, I’d say they’re an extension of it- with a heavier emphasis on content structure, entity signals, freshness, and third-party presence.Â
