New York Digital Marketing

Facing every challenge together with NEWMEDIA.

Digital marketing today largely depends on web development and the work that web design companies do. Content marketing, social media marketing, SEO services, and any other type of online marketing hold the keys to achieving business objectives. And all of those web marketing techniques have a singular goal:

To get more visitors to your website.

That’s precisely where web design and web development become crucial factors. The entire web design process has the mission of creating a successful website that converts and helps you conduct business more successfully. More than that, the right web design company can ensure a strong online presence for large and small businesses, which is something every business owner can appreciate. If you’re wondering how much a website can contribute to your company, every digital marketing company would agree that the contribution can be absolutely massive. Whether you’re working with a content marketing agency or base your strategy on social media marketing, your site will need to meet the challenge.

Modern website design projects aim to create perfectly responsive websites, and that’s for a good reason.

Namely, since your site appears at the end of your marketing funnels, it’s the primary means of turning leads into customers. Simply put, even the best marketing agency won’t be able to help businesses without highly functional, user-friendly websites. And the job of the web design company you select is to provide just that.

If you’re looking for New York City web designers to provide exceptional web design development services, NEWMEDIA will be just the agency for you. Our creative digital agency offers ideal business solutions and a complete suite of web design, web development, SEO, and branding services. But before we discuss what NEWMEDIA can do as your web design company, let’s dive deeper into the nature of web design.

What Does a Web Design Agency Do?

Ever since people started building websites, various attempts have been made in terms of responsive development and improved business performance. Initially, web design didn’t include the advanced digital solutions available today. Instead, early website content creation was limited to a handful of elements meant to present information in the most comprehensive way possible.

The beginnings of web design are a far cry from the developed industry that exists today. Modern design relies on extensive user research, content management system technology solutions, search engine optimization techniques, and, often, custom software development. A good web design company can improve a business tenfold. Still, not all small businesses grasp precisely what web design is.

One thing is certain: Web design is at the core of enterprise digital transformations that elevate businesses today. Consider this report by BusinessDIT:

bounce rate ecommerce

What does the figure of 47% bounce rate reveal? The answer is quite straightforward: e-commerce sites that reach the mentioned average bounce rate can hope to achieve decent sales. After all, a 50% bounce rate is considered optimal for most websites. However, the resource mentions a particularly interesting point – that these rates often depend on how a website loads and behaves. These traits often depend on the quality of design.

With the majority of users judging brands by web design, the difference between getting loads of conversions and losing a large percentage of leads lies in how functional and appealing your website is. With that in mind, every advertising agency project manager would tell you that hiring a full-service digital agency is the best marketing move you could make.

A good web design company will do more than take care of the visual appeal, though. Functionality and proper branding will be at the forefront as well. With the former, your web design agency will help you retain more satisfied customers, while the latter will strengthen your brand strategy.

When you find an experienced web design agency that can take care of all these elements and throw in additional services like mobile app development, you’ll be on the right track.

At its best, web design can complement your entire digital marketing, even boosting search engine optimization and social media marketing. While the importance of having a good web design agency may be clearer, chances are you still don’t know precisely what to expect from your web design team. That’s why we’ll delve deeper into the essential web design tools and how they’re used to uplift businesses. Plus, we’ll look at a common misconception: mixing web design with web development.

Web Design Principles

Every creative agency is essentially practicing an art form.

Content marketing firms, graphic design companies, and web design agencies make expressive, unique material that aims to produce a specific effect. Even putting down a particularly creative strategy for marketing can be akin to an art form. To that end, it’s no wonder that a web design agency follows specific principles. Rather than strict rules, these principles provide a set of guidelines that guide web design firms to produce the ultimate results. It’s also worth noting that these principles have roots in the best industry practices and represent tried methods of modern website building.

Web design firms follow numerous principles, but three will always take a central role. These are the principles of balance, contrast, and emphasis. There are also other crucial principles, but these three will always lie at the core of quality web design.

Balance is the act of making the entire website appear – well, balanced.

While this may sound simple enough, achieving that principle in practice can be quite challenging. It isn’t a matter of having each element correspond to the next in terms of size, style, and color. Instead, it’s about not letting any single part of a web page overtake the rest. For instance, if your agency also provides logo design services, the designers might want the logo to feature prominently on your website.

Now imagine that logo taking up the central space on a page while the text boxes and your CTA button are significantly smaller and done in subdued color schemes. The result would be that visitors would probably see and remember your logo, but many of them wouldn’t even notice the rest of the content.

Or, in the best-case scenario, the page would simply look unattractive. However, the answer wouldn’t be to make all other elements the same size as your logo. Instead, the principle of balance dictates that the rest of the page is brought to the visitor’s attention in a different way. If you try to imagine solutions to such scenarios, you’ll quickly realize that balance isn’t such an easy principle to uphold. And it gets complicated further once you take contrast and emphasis into account.

Much like balance, these two principles sound relatively straightforward and self-descriptive. And like balance, they’re harder to achieve.

Contrast is a matter of combining two elements of seemingly opposite traits – black and white is the easiest example to imagine. On the other hand, emphasis means you need to find a suitable way to bring certain elements to the forefront.

You might already sense how the three main principles play into each other. And, if you’ve paid attention so far, it’s probably clear that only expert, experienced web design firms will know what they’re doing here. These matters can get pretty delicate, which is precisely why a company owner usually can’t do web design for their own business – it takes a professional touch.

The above is particularly true when you remember that we’ve only talked about the three main principles here. If a web agency wants to help its clients achieve complete success, it should take other principles into account, too. These include hierarchy, unity, rhythm, and movement, among others.

We’ve talked about how the principles of web design have been developed from practice. But where did the practice come from? To answer that, we’ll examine the history of web design in the past three decades.

A History of Web Design

The first websites were developed in the 1990s. It didn’t take long for web design to emerge as a unique discipline in the digital world, particularly once the marketing agency angle of websites became apparent. Let’s see what happened with design from the earliest days of the internet to today.

1980s

While the late 1980s did see the rise of the internet, there wasn’t much to report in terms of web design services. At that point, the web primarily consisted of custom software development as all solutions were being built practically from scratch. Naturally, mobile apps were far off, historically speaking, and it would be some time before the world saw its first web agency. However, all this doesn’t mean there was no web design to speak of.

It was more that the possibilities were extremely limited, with early websites consisting of a black background, blocky text, and whatever designers could do with some colored pixels. With all that in mind, it’s staggering how soon the first web designers started appearing on the scene.

1991 to 1995

During the first half of the 1990s, the digital world saw plenty of firsts. These included an HTML page in 1991, the first internet photo in 1992, and clickable banners in 1994. While the internet was still in the custom software development area, its marketing potential was already becoming evident. The clickable banner was particularly noteworthy, paving the way for every marketing agency to start thinking about online possibilities. This banner was placed by AT&T and achieved a success that would be the envy of any marketing campaign by a new business today: its clickthrough rate was 44%.

Early web designer professionals also received their playground in the early ’90s through a revolutionary platform called Geocities. This was a web hosting solution where users could create home pages through a relatively comprehensive interface. More importantly, Geocities sites didn’t require code to put together – they functioned on a similar principle as modern-day WordPress or similar DIY platforms.

As the internet entered a new age with more and more advanced design, commerce development started blooming online. In other words, the tools were developed simultaneously as the demand for them grew. With all that considered, it’s no wonder that the online world would go through a bona fide revolution by the end of the decade.

Late 1990s

If the early ’90s were the internet taking its baby steps, the late ’90s saw the web learning to walk and even run. Website building transferred from an obscure niche into the mainstream as the internet was proving to be more than a brief technical extravagance. The online world was facing a rapid development that didn’t show signs of slowing down.

The number of people using the internet grew tenfold between 1994 and 1999. In addition to regular users, this era of web development saw the rise of companies that would become world-changing giants. Some of the largest names on that list include Google, Amazon, eBay, and Yahoo, to name a few. And as soon as Google is mentioned, you know that novel marketing techniques such as search engine optimization are around the corner.

But what initiated this internet boom of the late 90s? Simply put, it was programming languages and platforms. The first of those to truly change the online landscape was Javascript. This language ushered in the age of interactive design, allowing websites to feature interactive menus and forms that didn’t mandate the user to open a different page.

Adobe Flash came next, albeit it was known as FutureSplash at the time. What Javascript did for interactivity, Adobe Flash did for multimedia. Suddenly, websites could display animated GIFs and play audio and video files. The one negative aspect of Flash was that in order to see all that splendor, users had to install it on their systems.

Finally, the invention of CSS software can be seen as the crowning achievement of the decade. This software further improved the flexibility of websites in terms of design. And in combination with the legacy of Javascript and Flash, CSS paved the way for the modern web designer.

2000s

The early 2000s saw the rise of something that every marketing agency today considers essential: the blog. In particular, WordPress was launched at the beginning of the new decade (and century). By the middle 2000s, the platform gave its contribution to web design through the introduction of plugins and themes – both of which WordPress is famed for to this day. It should come as no surprise that social media marketing was getting nearer at this point. MySpace, the first social media network with a global reach, launched in 2004, changing the online world forever. But MySpace also impacted web development by inserting code directly into its web pages.

With blogging and social media marketing in place, it was time for the 2000s to push out one final groundbreaking invention: the smartphone. Until 2007, web development was strictly a matter of computers. But when the iPhone came out that year, the time had come not only for mobile app development but also for thinking of web development in terms of smart devices that could access the internet.

Everything that transpired in the 2000s left an undeniable mark in the world of web development and design, driving digital marketing to a new era of unprecedented possibilities. The following decade would see those possibilities exploited to the maximum.

2010 to Today

The start of the 2010s was when the internet started running wild with numbers. For instance, Statista provides this telling graph about the number of websites:

number of websites

Around 2015, websites were already being made in hundreds of thousands – the beginning of the trend that resulted in about two billion websites that we have today. While more websites mean a greater development of internet traffic, even these staggering numbers don’t tell the whole tale. Namely, the number of sites doesn’t account for mobile app development, which also contributes to that traffic.

The 2010s saw e-commerce development, more responsive web design, the rise of the mobile app development company, advanced search engine optimization, and more. This development doesn’t seem to slow down even now, three decades since the first websites went online.

Of course, modern web design agencies are a product of this progress. Speaking of which, it’s time to return to a crucial topic: why you need a web design company and more importantly, why you need one in New York City.

Why You Need New York

Web Design Services

The main reason why your business needs a web design company is quite straightforward: quality web design means better traffic, more visitors, and greater conversion opportunities. And a local New York City company can provide tailored designs for your specific needs.

Let's look at how your agency may achieve just that:

Powerful Branding

Branding is without a doubt one of the most powerful marketing tools your business may have. With good branding, your company can become a household name. At that point, gaining new leads and customers stops being a struggle.

A New York City digital marketing company can incorporate the elements of your brand into your website. Better yet, the agency can improve your brand’s aesthetics, making your business stand out even more.

Improved Lead Generation

A well-designed website can bring more leads your way by contributing to search engine optimization. The reason for this is simple: Google audits websites based on numerous factors, many of which are either directly or indirectly tied to design.

Collaborating with a professional web design company like NEWMEDIA can provide you with significant advantages in this regard. In addition to the visuals, your agency can drive commerce development forward, making your business more efficient in lead generation and conversions.

Showcase Your Achievements

Your website doesn’t only serve to attract new leads or convert those that already pass through your funnel. Instead, the site can become an ideal repository of your value where every visitor can see precisely what your business does and what quality you offer.

Testimonial pages are an ideal example of just that. Your web design company can create a dedicated space for testimonials on your site, as well as compelling About Us sections. In addition, you can use your website to showcase your products and services to illustrate the great value that your clients can have from your business.

Reviews and testimonials can be particularly important for gaining the trust of potential and actual customers. In fact, testimonials have the power to boost sales for products or services that usually have customers on the fence. Once people hear about the experiences others had with your offers, they’ll have a much easier time deciding to purchase. And a professional web design agency can make your testimonial sections stand out, making them even more compelling.

Reach Your Target Audience

If there’s one aspect of online commerce development that no business can deny, it’s the importance of your website being seen by the most promising prospects. This is one of the basic rules of marketing: get the right people where you want them to be, and sales will follow.

But you may wonder how web design contributes to reaching your target audience. The answer is relatively simple: through contributing to better site ranking. The better rank your site has, the more likely it will be to pop up when people are searching for specific terms. And, if you’ve done your search engine optimization right, those people will be the ones more interested in what you have to offer.

Captivating Design

Aesthetics may not play a vital commercial role like some other aspects of web design, but the visual appeal of your website should never be underestimated. While aesthetics aren’t directly tied to functionality or Google rankings, they’ll impact something just as important: first impressions.

Namely, the particular elements and their positioning on your pages may influence people to continue browsing or, at worst, leave your site after only a few seconds. In today’s fast-paced society, several seconds is all it takes for potential customers to decide whether they’ll move forward with your business. Of course, quality web design will maximize your chances of a positive outcome.

NEWMEDIA.COM

Your New York Web Design Company

Throughout this article, we’ve talked about what web design services are and how they contribute to the overall commerce development of a business. You might’ve noticed that we’ve emphasized the importance of quality service, meaning not every web design company will do if you want the best results. That’s precisely where NEWMEDIA comes in.

Throughout the years, NEWMEDIA has helped numerous businesses achieve success in their respective industries. We’ve enjoyed five-star reviews from satisfied customers and have won awards from some of the most influential portals in the digital marketing space.

Most importantly, NEWMEDIA offers a complete suite of digital solutions aimed at propelling your business sky-high.

Let's see what those solutions are:

Digital Marketing

Naturally, we’ll start with digital marketing as the basic discipline that brings all others together. While our topic here is web design, NEWMEDIA is far from merely that kind of an agency. Our offer includes sought-after activities like branding, cross-platform marketing, search engine optimization, and more. Best of all, we can provide these services in a unified package, giving you all of the advantages at the same time.

Web Development

Web development might not be the same as web design, but there’s no denying that the two go hand in hand. With NEWMEDIA, you can get both of these services simultaneously. And developing your website while also designing it provides us with the most control over the final product, bringing together the visuals and the functionality under the hood.

Why does this matter so much? Check out this image:

user interaction percent

This illustration from Zippia needs very little additional explanation. Over a third of your visitors will bounce when they see a poor design. While this may be judging the book by its cover, it’s also an undeniable truth. The negative impact of bad web design can be devastating, and NEWMEDIA can ensure your business never bears the consequences of design mishaps.

Design Customization

Another aspect where NEWMEDIA excels is creating unique websites that testify to your individual vision. With our services, you can rest assured your site will look like no other. Instead, it will be a one-of-a-kind experience for your visitors that will leave a powerful impression.

Better yet, we can create custom web designs while maintaining seamless functionality. To that end, NEWMEDIA will employ every known solution – and sometimes come up with novel ones of our own. As a result, you’ll gain a website that will be the envy of your industry while never failing to convert.

Website Design for Mobile Applications

If a website isn’t mobile-friendly today, it might as well be offline half of the time. Mobile development isn’t a novelty or an additional feature of modern websites. Instead, it’s a necessity, especially when we consider that more people browse the internet from their smartphones than they do via computers.

But an agency that only deals with web design might struggle to make your site mobile-responsive. That’s precisely where NEWMEDIA stands out with our capacity for web development as well as design. We can create sites that fit mobile devices like native apps and, at the same time, look and perform perfectly.

Hosting

As if everything said so far wasn’t enough, NEWMEDIA has another service that most agencies can’t provide: website hosting. If you’re wondering whether you need hosting from the same company that does your web design and development, consider this:

Hosting solutions need to be appropriate for the type of website. For instance, if you have plenty of graphics on your pages, you’ll need pages that load fast enough to satisfy consumers. And there are numerous other considerations in this vain. The solution? Let NEWMEDIA take care of hosting. You’ll be able to relax and know that your website is always online for everyone to visit.

Branding

We’ve mentioned how important branding can be in online marketing. It’s an important element of every type of marketing. Have a great logo, and you might attract more visitors than with a limited marketing campaign. Well, NEWMEDIA is here to give you the perfect brand image for your business.

With expertly done branding, your company can become instantly recognizable among your target customers and the broader public. NEWMEDIA can also ensure your branding is seamlessly incorporated into the design of your website, strengthening your overall brand image alongside with your online presence.

Search Engine Optimization

It’s no wonder that every story about digital marketing must end with the mention of the king of all strategies: search engine optimization. This technique can do wonders with lead generation and may surpass paid campaigns in terms of effectiveness.

When it comes to web design in terms of search engine optimization, NEWMEDIA can ensure that how your site is built improves your standing with leading search engines, particularly Google. We achieve this by making it easier for the search engine to index and rank your site. We also implement perfect functionality and ensure your site complies with the leading standards. All of these factors impact ranking, driving your website to the top of search results through pure SEO.
